Supplements for fertility is a growing segment in the dietary supplement market. PCOS is a leading cause for infertility. Inositol is often recommended for PCOS. Our NatMed article discusses the available evidence on using inositol for PCOS. We explain that inositol might offer some benefits for patients with PCOS. But we encourage providers to manage expectations about its effects on fertility – there’s no strong evidence that it improves the chance of getting pregnant.

Balancing Ink and Compliance—Managing Tattoos in Sterile Compounding Environments

Tasha Jackson, B.S., PharmD, BCSCP, and editor at CriticalPoint, recently posted a blog emphasizing the importance of enforcing staff hygiene, proper garbing, and addressing recent tattoos in hospital pharmacies to maintain a sterile environment. She explains that USP Chapter 797 mandates personnel with recent tattoos to report them to the designated person (DP), who then determines their role in compounding activities during the healing process. It’s noted that effective standard operating procedures (SOPs) are crucial for managing staff restrictions and alternate duties to minimize contamination risk. Additionally, thorough documentation and staff education on hygiene and contamination risks are essential for compliance and maintaining a safe compounding environment.

Pharmacy Law & Regulatory Update

Following the conclusion of the 2024 legislative session, Bula’s policy analysts are preparing a comprehensive summary highlighting significant legislative changes across each jurisdiction. Here are updates from three states that have recently passed legislation that expanded the scope of practice for pharmacists, technicians, and interns:

Michigan

  • SB 219 allows pharmacists, after completing an approved training program, to administer FDA-waived tests that use nasal or throat swabs, finger pricks, or detect COVID-19, influenza, or respiratory infections. Pharmacists can also dispense COVID-19 or influenza treatments without a prescription to individuals they have tested and administer immunizations to those aged three years or older.

Oregon

  • SB 1506 allows pharmacists to test for SARS-COV-2, prescribe, dispense, and administer treatment, including drug therapy. It also permits pharmacists to delegate tasks, including testing, to supervised technicians or interns.
  • HB 4002 allows pharmacists to prescribe and dispense early refills of medication for the treatment of opioid use disorders.

Tennessee

  • SB 0869 expanded the practice of pharmacy to include prescribing of waived antivirals for COVID and influenza, post-exposure prophylaxis and testing orders for HIV, epinephrine auto-injectors, progesterone-only hormonal contraceptives, dietary fluoride supplements for those over seven years old, and tuberculin purified protein derivate products.
  • SB 2048 increased the amount of ephedrine/pseudoephedrine a pharmacy can sell to an individual.
