For now, we advise caution and recommend only using xylitol in small amounts and avoiding processed foods loaded with sugar alternatives.

States such as California, Delaware, Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey, and Tennessee have introduced or updated legislation to allow pharmacists to prescribe and dispense HIV medications.  

Test and Treat for Flu, COVID-19, and Others  

Legislation in Tennessee, Oregon, Maryland, and Michigan has expanded the role of pharmacists to include testing and treating for conditions like the flu, COVID-19, and other illnesses.  

EpiPen Prescribing and Dispensing  

Alaska, Tennessee, and New Hampshire have introduced legislative updates allowing pharmacists to prescribe and dispense EpiPens. The new regulations may include expanded training for pharmacists or protocols to streamline the prescribing process.  

Opioid, Substance Use Disorder, and Controlled Substances Legislative Updates  

The opioid crisis continues to be a major focus of legislative efforts. Notable updates include:  

  • Arizona: Allows pharmacists to dispense naloxone under a standing order.  
  • Oregon: Allows pharmacists to prescribe and dispense early refills of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD).  
  • New York: Pharmacists are now authorized to administer injections of MOUD.  
  • Missouri: Allows pharmacists to dispense emergency supplies of chronic pain medications.
