Practice-Changing Updates

Answer Common Questions About First-Line BP Meds

Community Topic: Compare Nalmefene and Naloxone for Opioid Overdose Reversal

  • Pain Point: Medications for opioid overdose continue to be crucial. Clinicians will need to know about a new opioid reversal agent, nalmefene nasal spray (Opvee), that will join naloxone as the latest reversal option.
  • Solution: Our Pharmacist's Letter, Hospital Pharmacist’s Letter, Prescriber Insights: MD, Prescriber Insights: APRN, Prescriber Insights: PA, Pharmacy Technician’s Letter, and Hospital Pharmacy Technician’s Letter articles help compare nalmefene nasal spray with naloxone nasal spray, including time to onset, duration, and cost. In addition, we explain that a longer duration of action for nalmefene doesn’t seem to translate into better outcomes, and discuss counseling points for pharmacists when dispensing opioid reversal agents. Our resource, Meds for Opioid Overdose, provides additional guidance on who should have an opioid reversal agent on hand, when they should be administered, and which products are available over the counter.

Hospital Pharmacy: Sort Through Antimicrobial Myths

  • Pain Point: Appropriate use of antimicrobials is a key issue for health systems; however antimicrobial myths and misconceptions continue to hinder stewardship efforts.
  • Solution: Our Hospital Pharmacist’s Letter article identifies and debunks key myths about antimicrobial use. We summarize evidence to refute common misperceptions, and we give clinicians actionable recommendations to enhance antimicrobial stewardship. Our resource, Managing Beta-Lactam Allergies, provides more guidance about appropriate decision making in these cases, such as considerations for patients with reported allergies to penicillin, cephalosporins, or carbapenems.

NatMed Update

Cocoa for Cognition

  • Pain Point: We all have a love/hate relationship with chocolate. We love decadent treats but hate the effects it can have on nutritional goals. However, cocoa is now getting attention for cognitive benefits.

  • Solution: Evidence shows that cocoa flavanols might improve some measures of cognitive function. Our NatMed article provides insight on a clinical trial where episodic memory, global cognition, and executive function were among the measures evaluated.

Detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are critical to implement to ensure that your pharmacy complies with these regulatory changes. Bula is committed to providing clients with the best offerings possible, which is why our current USP SOPs now include a more comprehensive version created by our sister company, CriticalPoint. These customizable SOPs cover USP Chapters <797>, >795>, and <800>, ensuring compliance based on facility compounding practices.

Our SOPs have been developed, used, and refined over many years in various practice settings, effectively establishing robust operating procedures to ensure patient safety. Not only do these detailed procedures and forms offer guidance to foster compliance with Chapters <797>, <795>, and <800>, but they also adhere to aseptic processing best practices. We continuously refine and regularly update them to reflect regulatory changes, such as revisions to Chapter <797> and Chapter <800>.

In addition, we also offer policies and procedures templates, with over 300 pages of extensive pharmacy policies, procedures, and forms created by their policy analysts to assist you in quickly developing their manuals. These are complete templates, not just outlines of what a manual should contain, and are based on federal law. You can easily download the entire pharmacy policy and procedures manual template or specific chapters as needed. The templates are available as Word documents, simplifying revisions and updates.
